The Provincial Court of Alicante sentenced a man to 22 years, six months, and one day in jail for murdering his girlfriend on October 23rd, 2022, after stabbing her many times at their Alcoy house.
The magistrate who presided over this trial, which took place between January 12th and 20th, uses the popular jury’s verdict in his sentence and acquits the defendant of death threats and habitual abuse.
However, he is convicted of a murder committed with treachery and cruelty, with the aggravating circumstances of kinship and gender discrimination, according to the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV).
It also imposes a supervised release measure for ten years, which must be carried out when the prison sentence is served, and requires him to pay 255,437 euros in compensation to the deceased’s relatives.
The court verdict, which can be appealed to the Civil and Criminal Chamber of the High Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV), claims that the couple started dating in January 2022 and occasionally lived together at her house. There was at least one breakup in the summer of 2022, but the relationship was eventually renewed.
On October 15th, 2022, the accused and the victim argued about the loss of a mobile phone on the pavement near a nightclub in San Juan Beach, Alicante, where they had previously been.
During the disagreement, the now-convicted man continued to berate, pursue, and harass his companion, prompting a security guard from the business to intervene and offer to transport her to the home she gave him, which turned out to be her boyfriend’s.
On October 23, at around two a.m., in the girl’s home in Alcoy, the accused took a kitchen knife with a 14-centimetre blade and repeatedly stabbed her in various parts of her body, including her collarbone, face, and neck.
According to the proven facts portion of the sentence, one of the stab wounds punctured her lung and killed her, and after performing the murder, the accused tossed her out the kitchen window, where she collided with an asbestos roofing sheet.
Stabbed 18 times in row
The sentence establishes, based on the jury’s verdict, that the convicted man took advantage of his girlfriend’s being alone at home and unarmed “to ensure the effectiveness of the attack,” and that he carried it out “suddenly” so that she could not “foresee it or defend herself,” since she “could only instinctively put her forearms in front of him.”
The man who was sentenced to jail “intentionally increased the terror and suffering” that the victim was experiencing by “violently stabbing her 18 times in a row in a span of approximately one minute, and even as she lay dying, he continued stabbing her in the back of the neck,” according to the court. In reality, the young woman “spent about three minutes agonising and bleeding to death alone in the bathroom.”
According to the verdict, the man acted in this manner out of “jealousy and possessive nature” in order to “make his feeling of superiority clear” over his companion “because she was a woman.”
